A FLIR Thermal Studio alternative for Macs and mixed-brand teams

FLIR Thermal Studio is a capable piece of software. It is also Windows-only, reads FLIR files only, and costs $216–432 a year. If any of those three is your problem, here is how the alternatives compare.

The main alternatives to FLIR Thermal Studio are each camera brand's free Windows app (one brand each), Blackbody (free, Linux only, no reports), batch converters such as ThermoConverter (about $1,000, conversion only), and HeatDeck, which opens FLIR and InfiRay / Topdon files in one batch on Mac or Windows, measures and corrects temperatures, and exports PDF reports for $149 a year. Thermal Studio remains the most complete option for large FLIR-only workflows on Windows.

When Thermal Studio is the right tool

If your whole team shoots FLIR, works on Windows and uses advanced features such as large batch report templates, radiometric video or FLIR-specific camera integration, Thermal Studio is built for exactly that and the subscription is easy to justify. The case for an alternative starts when one of those assumptions breaks.

Three reasons inspectors look elsewhere

  • A Mac. Thermal Studio has no macOS version, and FLIR's old Mac app is discontinued.
  • A second brand. A DJI drone for roofs, a Topdon for quick checks, a HIKMICRO handheld from a subcontractor. Each brand's files need that brand's app, and the report has to be stitched together by hand.
  • The price. $216–432 a year is a lot for a sole trader who opens thermal files a few times a month.

What to test before you switch

Open a few of your own files in the free tier and check three things: that the temperature under the cursor matches what the camera showed for the same spot and the same emissivity, that changing emissivity moves the reading the way you expect, and that the report layout is something you would send a client. If those pass, the rest is a question of which formats you need.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to FLIR Thermal Studio?

Each brand's own app is free on Windows, and Blackbody is free on Linux, but neither combines brands or writes a report. HeatDeck's free tier opens and measures 10 images a day.

Does HeatDeck read FLIR files as accurately as Thermal Studio?

HeatDeck computes temperatures from the same raw data and camera calibration constants stored in the file. Check a few of your own images against the camera's readings in the free tier.

Can I mix FLIR and other cameras in one report?

Yes. FLIR and InfiRay / Topdon files open in the same batch today, and DJI, HIKMICRO and Fluke files are coming soon.
